I believe this is excellent as long as people remain aware of the kufiyya meaning.
I am afraid that its symbolism woud change like that of Guevara's iconiec picture.
While many still see it as an image of rebeling and looking for justice, others now see it as a symbol of "being cool". w yaba che guevara w osas, wow.
I hope the kufyya as a fashion icon doesn't hide its true symbolism.

Well I believe it all depends on the people using these fashion. Every idea, figure, thought, doctrine, symbol or fashion that someone holds, is affected by the people holding it. One example is as you mentioned people happy to be leftist or following Guevara for the sake of appearing different and unique than others, while these people might not know much information about him and his cause. This is a disgrace, in which these foolish people ruin the reputation of the basic idea or symbol. The situation goes for people representing their religion, or their country. What is worse is that people judge a group according to this unrepresentative bunch. Sad but true.
Therefore, I guess awareness and more knowledge about elements around us should be aroused. A great tool is wikipeadia ...
